Dial 90210 for Recession
Jan 15th, 2009 by ctoop
What is it about a financial crisis that makes us want to see rich kids on TV? At the start of the 90’s recession a TV show called Beverly Hills 90210 hit our screens, it was a big hit and was running for several years. Now in another recession the hit TV show is back with a new cast and new storylines.
But why is this? What is it about seeing rich people enjoying their lives that makes us feel better about ours? When we are saving the pennies and cutting out the luxury in our lives, why do we want to see 16 year olds jetting of to another state just for dinner?
What is it about the human psyche that makes us take pleasure out of other people’s joy? Is it to do with living life through these characters, a life that many could only dream of, but why dream of a life that you will likely never achieve?
It gives hope for the future that we could become similar to the people in these shows. It gives us something to aim for in the economic depression, a light at the end of the tunnel, a dream for the future.
