Internet sales: Wishing you a virtual Christmas
Dec 4th, 2008 by jwood
Stores were braced, yesterday, for an online shopping frenzy as credit crunch experts predicted a record £13 billion would be spent on internet sales in one day.
The spree was forecast to be even bigger than this time last year when the second to last Monday before Christmas set a record for internet sales.
The rush for bargains was set to start around midday yesterday with office workers logging on during their lunch breaks with hopes of scoring some last minute Christmas deals.
For now it seems that consumers are casting aside any credit crunch fears in favor of a more extravagant festive period, much to the relief of retailers who just a couple of weeks ago feared a catastrophic Christmas was ahead.
The weekend also saw massive sales on the nation’s high streets, with eight million bargain-hunters disregarding the recession to cash in on huge reductions due to mid season sales and the recent VAT reductions, and it seems many shops and retailers are reporting takings emulating figures from last year.
