New statistics have shown that it could cost UK households an extra £39million a day in heating costs due to the recent plunge in temperatures. With the average yearly household fuel bill now £1,278 and 5.4million in fuel poverty, many people are anxious about soaring energy costs during the current cold climate.
Remember to avoid risking your health by turning the heating down, instead try following these simple energy saving tips to keep your fuel bill as low as possible, as compiled by The Sun:
1. Draught proof your house, seal all gaps that cause draughts around windows, doors, floors and skirting boards. Try fitting a nylon brush seal to your letterbox as this will also reduce draughts.
2. Replace the ordinary light bulbs in your house with energy saving ones. This could save you around £10 per year. Remember to switch the lights off it you leave a room.
3. Only use your dishwasher and washing machine when you have a full load. Switch to a 30 degree wash.
4. Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly to maintain efficiency.
5. Don’t leave household appliances on standby, remember to switch them off at the mains.
6. Close your curtains when it gets dark to keep the heat in.
7. Move furniture away from radiators to allow heat to circulate.
8. Only boil as much water as you need in the kettle.
9. Have a shower instead of a bath.
10. When buying a future kitchen or home appliance make sure it’s “A” rated as they use far less electricity than conventional models.
